Considering Adult Orthodontics?
Frequently asked questions
Why would an adult consider orthodontic treatment?
There are four main reasons that adults consider orthodontic treatment:
- Aesthetics
- Improvement of dental health related to periodontal and restorative issues
- Improvement of structural health related to joint function as well as head and neck problems.
- Elimination of facial and cervical pain.
Can functional orthodontics expand the upper arch and reposition the lower jaw of an adult?
Yes. Dr. Chinappi has years of experience and many successful cases expanding and repositioning the jaws of adults.
Is there a relationship between periodontal health and the bite?
Yes. A malocclusion (bad bite) can cause trauma and impact periodontal health. Orthodontics applying functional expansion will eliminate the trauma and assist in healing periodontal pockets as opposed to orthodontics which closes the spaces and can worsen the periodontal condition.
What comes first, orthodontic treatment or restorative dentistry (implants, bridgework, etc.)?
Anyone considering restorative dentistry would be wise to have an orthodontic evaluation done first. There is no sense in replacing teeth or dental work in an environment that is not aligned correctly. It is best to undergo orthodontic treatment before and in conjunction with restorative work.
